S.T.O.P.P.E.D. PROGRAM BEING OFFERED IN ERIE COUNTY
Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard and representatives of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Western New York and Erie County Clerk Dave Swarts unveiled a county wide initiative called S.T.O.P.P.E.D. (Sheriffs Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers).
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office with the help of the Independent Insurance Agents Association, is offering this program to parents to help extend their watchful eyes and raise awareness of drivers under the age of 21; the initiative also will provide parents with the means of potentially correcting their son’s or daughter’s driving behavior before it may be too late.
The program works like this:
Parents voluntarily register with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office any motor vehicle that will be operated by a driver under the age of 21. (Can register by downloading an application on line and then mailing the application in; or by filling out an application - available at sheriff’s substations, DMV Offices throughout the county, and at participating insurance agencies)
An identification decal is issued (mailed back to parents) and affixed to the upper left side of the windshield of each registered vehicle.
If for any reason, the registered vehicle, when operated by a driver under the age of 21, is stopped by Sheriff’s deputies, the officer will complete a notification card providing the following information:
 - Time and location of stop

- Driver’s name and number of passengers

- Reason for the stop

- Whether any traffic tickets were issued.
Notifications are e-mailed and/or mailed to parents to make them aware of potential problems, enabling them to enforce any parental rules that often coexist with teenage driving privileges.
