The Technology and Advancement Division Oversees the Communications Unit, Technical Services unit and the Computer Crime Unit.
The responsibilities of the Information Services Unit are to evaluate computer user needs, hardware/software requirements, maintain, repair all computer equipment for the agency. This unit evaluates emerging law enforcement technologies with respect to the mission of the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
The responsibilities of the Computer Crime Unit are to conduct and provide expert assistance & training to Erie County Sheriff's Office Personnel, and other law enforcement agencies, with investigations pertaining to the criminal use of computers and related technologies.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office, Computer Crime Unit is a Member Agency:
- Charter Member of the Western New York Cybercrime Initiative; which is a Regional Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee for Computer related crime for the Western District of New York State;
- Charter Member of the Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory (RCFL/WNY). Sheriff's Office personnel are assigned as a Computer Forensic Examiner on a full-time basis.
- Charter Member Western New York Infragard Program. Designed to promote cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the private sector in protecting the infrastructure, with a concentration on Information Security for the Western New York Region.
- Member National Cybercrime Training Partnership. The Erie County Sheriff's Computer Crime Unit is one of nine New York State agencies participating. This partnership is committed to the development and dissemination of quality high-tech crime training to the entire law enforcement community throughout the United States and abroad.

Communications Unit
The responsibility of the Communications Unit is to oversee all communications functions of the Erie County Sheriff's Office, including/receiving:
- E-9-1-1 calls from areas of Erie County directly serviced by the Sheriff's Office, including regular calls (7-digit number) for assistance.
- Cellular phone calls for assistance and aid.
- Administrative calls.
- Radio dispatching and radio communications.
- The national Air Warning Service Network in Western New York, disseminating weather warnings and other emergency calls relating to public safety.
This unit is also responsible for radio purchases, maintenance and repair. Additional responsibilities include portable radios, police vehicle radios, cellular phones and pagers.
The Radio System coordinates radio contact with various other agencies such as fire controls, hospitals and ambulances, Mercy Flight helicopter, Highway, County government and adjoining police agencies in Western New York.
Mobile Communications Reserve
The Mobile Communications Reserve Division regularly assists the Erie County Sheriff's Office with communications at various community events throughout the year.
Personnel are on reserve status to help the Sheriff's Office at any events that require additional manpower for effective mobile communications operations.
