Alden EMS Qualifies for Glucometer Use

EMS Captain Ryan Sheedy (L) and EMS Lieutenant Ellen Stanley (R)
are presented with Glucometers by Pat Kreuser-Adams, Roche Diagnostics
Representative
As of 12 November 2007 the Alden Hook and Ladder EMS Department is certified to use Blood Glucose monitor.
Up until now all EMS students have had the knowledge to recognize hyperglycemic (high) or hypoglycemic (low) Diabetic emergencies. But at the EMT-B level they had to rely on bystanders or family members to use a patient's personnel Glucometer to give them a reading or wait for Advanced EMS intercepts to confirm the emergency. So under close Medical Direction the AHL EMS Department EMT's have recently been training in the use of Blood Glucose Monitors and how to interpret the results. This saves precious minutes when we can alert incoming Advanced care to the true nature of the emergency.
The largest drawback to any new equipment is of course finances and budgets. This is where Pat Kreuzer-Adams a representative of Roche Diagnostics answered the call. A presentation to the Department of almost $1300 in equipment has the program up and running. Glucometers, testing strips, and maintenance solutions were presented to Ryan Sheedy, EMS CPT and Ellen Stanley, EMS LT. recently.
The Alden Hook and Ladder EMS Department is extremely grateful to Ms. Kreuzer-Adams and Roche Diagnostics and is ready to provide our patients with another tool.
